Day Dream Dress
Dress and sculpture designed as part of an exhibit focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion. The concept for my sculpture was the diversity of our minds and our ways of thinking. I wanted to highlight the fact that our minds all work differently and there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to taking care of our mental health. The white pipe cleaners represent the inner-workings of the mind and the pink represent a thought traveling through. The pink pipe cleaners are all connected; and move throughout the sculpture slowly to indicate that some people have a difficult time letting go of certain thoughts caused by overthinking. For my dress, I chose to make a bubble skirt to compliment the lines and shape of the sculpture. I chose pink and white fabrics to reflect the colors of the pipe cleaners and added the pink sash across the front to mimic the movement of the pink pipe cleaners on my sculpture. The sparkly pink fabric makes the dress look pretty and cheerful which contrasts with the tangled web of my sculpture. I created this contrast to show that someone may look fine on the outside, but they can still be facing an unseen struggle mentally.
