My collection is entitled "Belladonna." Belladonna is a poisonous plant, and the word translates to “beautiful woman” in Italian. My collection combines feminine elements like ruffles with punk elements like metal hardware to challenge the way society portrays women. Women who embrace their femininity by enjoying things like dresses and the color pink are stereotyped as being “delicate” and “sensitive,” while women who have a more punk style with piercings, dyed hair, and distressed clothing are seen as “wild” and “not ladylike”. I wanted my collection to show that there is more than one side to a woman no matter how she chooses to dress. I took inspiration from female artists like Avril Lavigne, Maggie Lindemann, and Olivia Rodrigo and their girly punk looks. Seeing women react to the overturning of Roe v. Wade by protesting and making their voices heard showed how women can be bold, outspoken, and rebellious. My goal for this collection was to more accurately portray femininity by capturing the juxtaposition of soft, frilly femininity with the bold, powerful side of women.
